The Myth of "18 Months of Research and Hard Work" - Deer Committee Activities Exposed
Over the last few days we have been hearing the phrase from the
Pro-Cull people how the Deer Committee did "18 months of research and
hard work" before they reached the decision to have a cull. I decided to
look into it and thought that I would review the Deer Committee meeting
minutes where their research and hard work would be documented and
discussed. What I found was just plain shocking. You can access the Deer
Committee meeting minutes from the following link:

1. The Deer Committee was appointed in January 2011. So we can assume
that the start of their 18 months of research and hard work did not
start until the committee was formed. Alas! we are only 12 months from
the forming of the deer committee. How do we count 18 months here to
start with? Please see the supporting link

2. The first meeting of the Deer Committee was held on February 8,
2011. They discussed what Cranbrook and Kimberley were doing, talked
about a no-feeding by-law and a deer count. The second meeting was on
February 22, 2011 and a hand-written minute note shows they are still
talking about a deer count and printing some pamphlets ( none were ever
printed - by the way).
3. The next meeting was on March 15
where the main guest of the meeting was Ron Kerr - the strongly pro-cull
head of the Kimberley Deer Committee and the future deer killing
contractor who completely ignored conflict of interest laws by
recommending a cull in Kimberley and then receiving the contract to cull
the deer in Kimberley. He would also bid for the Invermere Deer Cull
contract very shortly.
4. The next meeting was on April 5,
2011. John Zehnder did a presentation on hazing. The committee was
interested in getting the First Nations involved in a cull. By the next
meeting on May 3, the committee is already concerned about how to
dispose of the deer after the cull and the planning for a cull is in
full swing. By the May 13 meeting, they are already deciding to apply
for a cull permit from the province. So, it took them only 3 months -
February to May to get to a decision about a cull. Their main influence
was Ron Kerr, the pro-cull Kimberley Deer Committee Head and the future
recipient of the deer killing contract who would benefit financially
from a cull.
5. On the meeting on May 30, the Deer Committee
decided to accept the Kimberley Deer Committee report that was prepared
by (again) Ron Kerr, the Kimberley Deer Committee Head and the future
deer killing contractor as the model for their own report. The Invermere
Deer Committee decided to copy an paste the Kimberley Deer Committee
report and submit it to the council.
This is the example of
"18 months of Research and Hard Work" that we hear of so often. Read
through the minutes and decide for yourself. Only 3 months of meeting
before deciding on a cull, influence by Ron Kerr and then a copy and
paste report.
